Some recent news regarding the club
Team News
The juniors have had a marvellous season, winning all of their fixtures in the under 14s division of the Barkston Ash Lawn Tennis League. The Barwick team included the following players over the course of the season: Emily Clark, Charlotte Murray, George Fairbrother, Bryn Towning and Jack Murray. All players contributed to the team's success, with the normal pairings of Emily/Bryn and Charlotte/George putting the team into a leading position before the final match at Whitkirk. Jack Murray (aged 10, playing in the under 14s) came into the team for the final match to play with Bryn and they clinched the deciding game to take victory by the narrowest margin of 25-23.

The Mens A team made a good start to the season but then suffered two losses, one to Horsforth and a second to Bardsey who gained revenge for the defeat they suffered at Barwick earlier in the season. The Mens division looks like it will be a really tight affair in 2010. The B team continue to improve and many players are pushing A Team players for their places.
The mixed doubles team is playing in a higher division this year, after their successful season in 2009. The team lost their first two matches against tough opposition, but managed a win in their third match against Collingham.
2010 New Inn Tournament
Many thanks again to our sponsors for their support in this event. A very close qualifying session resulted in Chris Bolton being the winner in the mens section. The second mens final place was filled by John Hayton after he won a play-off with Keith Monkman. The final itself matched Ann Moore and Chris Bolton against Andrea Gilliland and John Hayton and was a closely contested affair. The match was in the balance until the last few games. An injury sustained by Chris towards the end of the match may have been the deciding factor. He played on, but eventually he and Ann just lost out to Andrea and John by 6 games to 4.
2010 American Tournament
The Amercian Tournament was held on Sunday 9 May in bright sunshine. The entrants included new members Richard, Jason and Stephen. Jason has been a member of the club before and he renewed the battle with some excellent form, as if he had not been away from the game at all. In the final, Louise Schottler and Richard Mullin were just edged out by Ann Hartley and John Hayton after a tense set.
Many thanks to all of you for attending and those of you who help out with the organisation of the barbeque.
2010 Annual General Meeting
The club held its AGM in February. Please click here to see the minutes of the meeting. There were no changes to annual subscriptions for 2010.
2009 Leslie Collett
The winners of this tournament in 2009 were Dave Wilkinson and Keith Monkman. On a glorious sunny September day, the 'seasoned campaigners' were narrow victors over Ann Hartley and Mark Wheeler in the final.
2009 Club Championships
This year saw an unprecedented treble completed by Andrea Gililand, winner of the ladies singles and then partnering Jill Druce to win the ladies doubles and Richard Mullin for the mixed doubles title.
In the mens singles, Jonny Miller completed a fifth successive title win, coming back from a set down to beat John Hayton in three sets.
The mens doubles final was a nail biting affair with Glyn Frampton and Andy Bowater edging out Lewis Towning and Keith Monkman. For those of you interested (?) the match statistics are available from Mark Wheeler.
Pictures of all the winners are available on the Club Competitions page.
2009 Barkson Ash League
Unfortunately, the Mens A Team has been unable to repeat the success of 2008. They finished third in the league, behind winners Bardsey and second placed Horsforth. The Mens B Team have had some close matches, with three wins in the season which is an improvement on previous years, including a close tussle with title winners Bardsey which resulted in a narrow 35-37 loss.
The Mixed Team have continued their progress, ending the season with more wins than in recent years. Their 5 wins and a draw will leave the team placed third in the table. Apart from Boston Spa, who will win the league by a good margin, all other matches have resulted in either wins or narrow losses by less than 10 games which indicates that the team is strengthening all the time.
The juniors have had tight matches against all teams in the league and ended in mid table. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped with home matches and driving duties to away fixtures.
2009 New Inn Tournament
This event, kindly sponsored by a local public house, was completed on 6 June 2009. In a keenly contested tournament, four men were in with a chance of making the final going into the last qualifying round - Andy Bowater, Glyn Frampton, John Hayton and Keith Monkman.
Glyn and John won through and then John partnered Ann Moore to take the title against Glyn and Ann Hartley in the final. The match may well have turned on the loss of Glyn's contact lens half way through the deciding set. Somehow Glyn managed to play on but eventually had to concede defeat by 6-4.
2009 American Tournament
With a record turn out, the American Tournament was a great success, particularly as John was not in charge of the BBQ this year. Thanks to all who helped with the event.
On court, the competition was won by Andrea Gilliland and John Hayton who retained their title in 2009, beating Ann Moore and Richard Mullin in the final. With eighteen competitors, this was the highest turnout for several years and it is hoped that members' support will continue for other events during the season.
2009 Annual General Meeting
Despite the freezing temperatures, there was an excellent attendance at the club's Annual General Meeting, held on 10 February 2009.
The Chariman's report summarised a 'steady year' in terms of membership numbers and some good progress in finishing off the court painting, resulting in a playing surface which the club should be proud of. The treasurers report indicated a only a small deficit during the year, despite there being signifcant expenditure on the courts. The Match Secretary reported on the success of the club's A Team in the Mens Division of the Barkston Ash Lawn Tennis League and an improvement in the Mixed Doubles performance compared with the previous year.
During the past few months the club committee had been drafting a Constituion and Rules document and, with a small amendment to the document that was circulated to all memebers prior to the AGM, the Constitution and Rules was adopted by the club.
A new club Secretary was appointed, Mark Wheeler. The retiring Secretary, Jill Druce, remains as a member of the committee and the Chariman thanked Jill for her tremendous work during her time as an officer of the club. All other committee members and officers were re-appointed.
The meeting closed at 8.20pm.
2008 Club Championships
The 2008 Club Championships, the qualifying matches for which were played over the summer, were decided on finals day on Saturday 20 September. Congratulaitons to all the winners, whose photographs appear on the Club Competitions page.
The finals were completed in the fading light at around 7pm, one of the longest finals sessions in recent history, reflecting the hard fought battles of the day. There were no surprises in the mens singles as Jonny Miller lifted the trophy again, beating John Hayton, whilst a terrific battle in the ladies singles saw Andrea Gilliland just edging to victory against Becky Foster. Well done to these two who had both competed in three finals that day.
The mens doubles was won by Glyn Frampton and Matt Prior, defeating Richard Fenton and Lewis Towning. Again this was a close match, running to a third and deciding set and a great effort by Lewis to reach the final as a junior. Becky Foster and Ann Moore took the ladies doubles, beating Andrea Gilliland and Jane Wheeler in the final. Becky Foster added the mixed doubles title to this victory, partnering Matt Prior, against the pairing of Andrea Gilliland and Charlie Philpotts.
Many thanks to all of you who supported the event, including of course Keith Monkman who organised the Club Champoionships through the year and on finals day itself. It was a glorious day to play and watch tennis.
2008 Barkson Ash League
Congratulations to the Barwick A Team for winning the Mens division of the Barkston Ash League. The title was clinched on a windy Saturday afternoon in the team's final match against Scholes. Most of the rubbers were close in the final match but the tie was decided with a magnificent 11-1 win in the final set by Jonny Miller and Stewart Trewartha. The division win was a fine team effort, there being 8 players in the Barwick team during the course of the season. See Club Teams for a photograph of the team.
2008 Leslie Collett Tournament
Despite all the weather warnings, the Leslie Collett tournament was completed in brilliant sunshire on Sunday 7 September. The worthy winners were Matt Prior and Brian Walker who edged to victory in a nail-biting final against Ann Hartley and Mark Wheeler. A tie-breaker was required to provide a result - see Club Competitions for a photograph of the winners.
