The club was founded in 1972 with a significant amount of effort on the part of the founder members. Here are some pictures of those founder members, some of who are still playing at the club today.
The land for the club was made available by the council together with funds for the court development. In the first instance the club had two courts, running perpendicular to the current court layout, as members will recognise from the following photograph.
The pavillion was added in 1974 to provide a meeting room and changing faciities. As the club continued to prosper, an additional court was added which also enabled participation in the Yorkshire Leagues for which three matches would be played simulaneously. This change, in 1984, helped the club grow futher and a selection of photographs of members who have enjoyed playing tennis at Barwick over the years is shown on the gallery page.
The club has always looked to improve its facilities and in 1990 floodlights were added to one of the courts. This was done with club funds and the considerable effort of the membership at the time. Shortly after this improvement the courts were given another 'facelift' with the surface spray of green and red, as they are today.
Perhaps the additional playing time that the floodlights provided and improved court surface in the early nineties were contributing factors in Barwick Tennis Club achieving the unique double of Barkston Ash League and Knockout Cup in 1995.
The club has always been at the forefront of competitive club tennis, but at the same time there has also been a recognition that the social side of the game is just as important, as evidenced by the following photograph !
